SEOs world wide would have been redirected to the dreaded page of the “site explorer update” In a nutshell, this service is no more and we are going to have to find another place to locate a reliable source of backlinks.

We were all told that Yahoo site explorer was going to be closed down at some point, but it has come to a shock to all SEO’s of the world. Such a massively used and reliable tool is now no more.

Yahoo have said that Yahoo search has been merged with Bings’ Webmaster tools. For many toolbars such as SEO Book, this has caused a massive problem. Beforehand, we had the ease of viewing the amount of backlinks a page had, without even having to open up another browser.

What Is Next?

It is fair to say that Yahoo! Are finished and this site explorer integration to Bing was the last step. SEO’s will have to find a new source of information to base their research on, this will prove to be a difficult task, especially because Yahoo was free and provided excellent results. This could lead to many SEO companies having to go down the route of purchasing software which was once not needed but could now be an essential factor of any SEO business.

The integration into Bings’ Webmaster tools could prove to be a good thing, however this may not completely take off because it may be unable to include into a toolbar like it was for Yahoo site explorer. Fingers cross that there is something that can be done on the situation, because SEO’s will be feeling the burn of an essential tool being snatched away.

Facebook page owners would have noticed this morning that there has been an upgrade on Facebooks’ insights. Previously there was a terrible amount of data provided, but now it has definitely had an upgrade and is somewhat useful now.
The first and most obvious change would be that when an admin goes to their page, then the insights tab shows up amongst other tabs such as the wall and photos. This is, if anything, an attempt by Facebook to nudge page owners to use their analytics a little more.

The Overview

When you click on the insights tab, you are taken to a quite colourful graph, this shows your pages’ reach, people talking about your page and the content you posted. Displaying the graph this way allows Facebook admins to analyse what posts did well and how they can improve their future strategy by what performed well in the past.

Posts In Detail

Facebook now describes very detailed information about each post. Information provided is as follows: Reach, Engaged Users, Talking About This and Virality.

Reach

Reach is not a new term in social media, it basically means the amount of unique people that saw your post. Reach is a fairly important factor to think about, and the higher your Reach is, the more likely you fan base will increase and become active and valuable to your business. A Reach graph is available for each post and it displays the amount of organic, paid for and viral views your post has received.

Engaged Users

This means the amount of users who have interacted with your post, for example clicking on it or commenting. When clicking on the number of engage users you had for that post, a pie chart will be displayed. There are two categories for this chart, the amount of stories generated to other clicks. Stories generated include when someone likes, comments or shares your post. Other clicks is anything that does not fall under that umbrella, for example clicking on the post to see how many people have liked or commented.

Talking About This

A person talking about your post is someone who created a post about yours. This can also count as a like or comment, basically any action that would result in content appearing on a fans wall which is related to yours. When clicking on the number, another pie chart is displayed which shows the amount of comments, likes and shares.

Virality

Virality is a percentage which is figured out by the talking about figure divided by reach, times 100. In essence, virality is the conversion rate of a post because the aim of each post is to engage fans, and the virality percentage displays this very well.

Conclusion

Facebook have greatly improved their analytics and I know that I will definitely be using them to monitor my posts to see progress and find areas on which I can improve in. Social media now has an equivalent to SEO and their Google Analytics and that is Facebooks Insights. I think this update has been much needed and now the data that is provided is up to par there is no doubt that more and more Facebook admins will be using this service.

Optimising your social media profile is very similar to a website. There are fields like bio and name which are like the page title and description, but the main advantage is that if you are regularly using these profiles, then your page will have fresh and regular content, which Google loves. So how do you make the most of this opportunity?

Firstly, these profiles will naturally rank quite high when searching the name of the profile in Google. If there is a consistency in the profile names, for example all of our profiles are named either SEO Positive or SEO Positive LTD, these naturally rank. However, if we want our Twitter, Facebook and Google plus profiles to pop up when someone searches the name SEO Positive, how do we do that?

Link building, it is a very simple technique that works with websites and also social media profiles. If you or your company has a blog, throw a link in to your profile, for example you can mention the word Twitter, and link your Twitter profile to that. If you want to take the more extreme route, you can use an anchor text link with your business name. This is the best thing you can do to optimise your profiles. By making an effort of linking to your profiles in each of your blogs, even if they are guest posts, then your profiles will rank higher because of this.

Having your social media profiles rank higher is great for things like reputation management, because it makes your profiles more visible to potential customers which will not only help increase your following, but also help your customers get to know you and your company a little better.

Conclusion

Because your own company name is not a very competitive key term, so you should see results quite soon, and if you make a conscious effort to send links in the direction of your social media profiles, then your profiles will stay up there and not only help build your fan base or following, but help build and maintain your current reputation.

Tags: engine, facebook, Google, management, media, optimisation, plus, reputation, search, seo, social, Twitter
Posted in Facebook, Google, Link Building, Search Engine Optimisation, Social Media, Twitter

If you were to try and use Twitter to help link build for your site, you would be called insane because Twitter make all of their links no follow. What if there was a way that you could use you Twitters’ content, to create a website and link out from that website to your own site which is in need of inbound links.

Twylah is an ingenious idea that has been long awaited. The site pulls all of your content from Twitter and organises it into topics which is based on keywords in the mini blogs. Twylah also shows what topics are trending with each user. According to Twylah, my trending topics are: SEO, Google, Facebook, Brand, Social Media and Google +. That sounds fairly accurate to me.

Besides Twylahs’ clever trending feature, it has much higher potential. I myself guest blog quite frequently, and have made a constant effort to link build to my Twylah page to help increase the worth of that site in Googles’ eyes. My Twylah page has a PR of 1, however I have also been link building to SEO Positive’s Twylah page and they have a PR of 3! This must be due to where the links are coming from because the SEO Positive page has a few links going to the page where as my laustinseo Twylah page currently has none. This must be due to SEO Positives PR of 5.

So if your Twylah page does have a relatively high PR, then you can begin to use it. The first and most obvious would be to link to pages that need more attention in terms of search engine optimisation, this is what would naturally happen, but also you could begin to sell a link going from your Twylah page, to someone elses and it can become an outgoing link service, all from your Twitter feed.
Believe or not there is a positive for Googles’ freshness update, although you as an SEO may not see it straight away due to the tedious content update. It is actually a good thing that it has been released.

Keeping the Numbers Up

We all know Google receives the most searches globally, and that is because it provides the best search results, and it does that by having one of the toughest algorithms a search engine could have. Websites are optimised for Google to help put them up in the SERP’s, but if no one used Google as a search engine, then no one would optimise their site for the big G! The freshness update is just another element that keeps Google on top as the boss of search.

Searching Far and Wide

With search engines that are not as developed as Google, users must check a lot more pages to find the desired information, but with Google searches are resolved quicker and position 1 gets roughly 50% of total traffic. With the freshness update, the most recent and therefore most likely relevant results will appear higher. Freshness is yet another update that helps to make Google SERP’s the most accurate.

Quality, Not Quantity

Google has always loved good quality content, but now the pressure to provide content of such a high standard is on. Before the fresh new update from Google, some sites had a blog and some didn’t, but now it is more important and beneficial than ever. Not only to have a blog, but regularly update it too! This is contributing to better quality of not only content but the web design and the whole website as a whole.

Conclusion

If Google did not update their search engine with updates like this then they wouldn’t be on top, we all know Google is possibly one of the most demanding things for an SEO, but it has its benefits for its’ users and the websites that appear in the SERP’s, whether we can notice it or not.

Blogs have always been crucial for search engine optimisation; there are a few factors of your writing that need to be spot on. The reason why a blog is essential for SEO is because it generates fresh and usually relevant content, and depending on how often the blog is updated, the more or less helpful it will be.

Updating Your Blog

Adding new articles to your blog can be very difficult, the actual writing part is one of the easiest steps, and it’s actually the topic of the article which can be the hardest to come up with. This isn’t a bad thing, it is just a case of writers block and everyone gets it from time to time. One way I have found to help inspire topic ideas for articles is by signing up to Google alerts for topics that I write about. Sometimes even this does not help because there are periods of time where nothing new is happening in your industry but something will eventually turn up. It is through the times where nothing “new” is happening which will prove to be some of the most difficult for writing, but when this happens it is the perfect time to write how to’s and the infamous top 5 things not to do articles. They may seem a little bit repeated, but if you are writing for SEO reasons, then the topic should not be of a huge concern anyway.

Adding Keywords

Adding keywords is something a lot of bloggers can struggle with but the correct keywords tend to pop into the article naturally. If you key word stuff your article, it will have a negative effect due to the black hatted techniques. Also the quality of the article will be severely poor.

As long as the topic you are blogging about is related to your industry, you will find the keywords do flow naturally, if for some reason the keywords are not in your article. Just go over the article and find a section where you can add them. One way of doing this is by adding an example where you mention your keywords.

Linking to the Right Page

Once you have keywords in your article, you then need to link to the right pages. Try and link exact keywords to the page you are optimising for them terms, also if you are on Google plus or any other social network, like Twitter, you can link build using your blog for key phrases like a company name, or a key term you want your profile to show up for.

Conclusion

Writing can prove to be difficult, and when that writing is affecting you SEO efforts, the pressure begins to mount up, but by baring a few things in mind, the problem of writers block can be avoided and your writing will begin to benefit your optimising efforts.

Google announced yesterday that there have been some more changes in their annoying algorithm. A total of 10 changes have been made public but that does not necessarily mean there isn’t any more.

For the full list, visit their inside search blog for the full details. The most important update is most likely the freshness update. It was announced on the 3rd but has been added to this list, this somewhat emphasises how important the freshness factor is.

The freshness update is looking for the most recent content in a nutshell. Google believes that it is more likely for someone to be searching for information that is more up to date, instead of historical information. However some may be using Google to research past events, the majority use Google for recent updates. That is what the update is telling us anyway.

SEOh NO!

No need to panic in terms of SEO, we all know that Google loves content and it always will. This freshness update may have become somewhat of a surprise but this update can be used to an advantage. The majority of people do have a blog which naturally relates to their business, so if you are not already, just make sure your blog is regularly updated.

There are a load of different types of conversions, but the question of Facebook ads dawns on all Fan Page owners, is it worth paying to get a few extra fans? And more importantly, will they convert?

A sister company of SEO Positive, who are fairly new in their industry, however they have tried to use Facebook ads and over the period of time that they were running these adverts, their following sky rocketed. But did they convert into sales?

Their Facebook store did not receive any sales, however they did use voucher codes that where only advertised via their social media accounts, there were two uses of this code which means that the discount code was seen and there were conversions. It must be raised that some of the fans on Facebook may have converted but went under the radar by not using the social media codes. The only way that this can really be combatted is to have a “where did you hear about us” section somewhere on the website.

By having a voucher code that was just for social media, the company were able to track some of their Facebook efforts. But it is nearly impossible to track all of them due to the lack of analytics Facebook provide. The voucher code is a great idea that all social media campaigns should be including because it does give some insight into how social efforts are going.

Conclusion

It is difficult to say whether or not Facebook ads will result in conversions, many think that the money spent on Facebook might as well have been spent on Google Adwords because the conversion rate would be higher, this is not always the case due to website usability compared to Facebook pages, this varies between sites but it is something that will change between niches and companies. The best thing to suggest is to try and find a Facebook ads free credit code where you can test it out to see whether your business gains any benefit from Facebook ads.

Bit of an odd title, granted but the auto DM can lead you to DooM if you’re not using it correctly. I myself don’t use any auto DM’s because I change my mind quite frequently about what I want to say to my new followers, however, I do send a thank you message to all of my new followers the following morning.

For those of you that do want to use auto DM’s, you need to learn how to use them to benefit you in the best way possible. My own DM that I send out to all of my followers goes like this: “Hi there, thanks so much for the follow, if i can ever help you, give me a call on 07749122332, after 5PM UK time, have a great day ! ” It may be a little bit cheesy, but it has benefitted my Twitter profile greatly. It also may seem a little crazy, giving your phone number to people you don’t actually know, but I have only ever had one phone call from one of my followers and it was a fairly normal conversation even though I had no idea who they were.

Something I see a lot is companies sending auto DMs to their new followers with brand new promotions and asking them to buy from them or something similar. This is something that should be avoided. This new follower has no idea what the company is about and has not yet built a relationship with them, and instantly, they are being sold to. This is not the way to do it.

What I would suggest is that if you want to push your products from the word go, thank the new follower, and then offer them a discount or a chance to enter one of your competitions. This way, your brand or product is being pushed, but by using this method, you aren’t suffocating your new found audience and on top of that, you’re giving them something for free in return for following them.

Conclusion

Every different company has a different technique for social media. For example, an SEO company may take a more hands on approach and really push their SEO services, along with PPC and Web Design, then again some may take a very laid back approach and barely mention that they offer these services, but there are indefinitely a few do’s and don’ts that all campaigns should bear in mind.

Yesterday we were all made aware of the long awaited release for Google Plus, but we need to think whether there is much point spending a lot of time designing and creating another page, when you already have a Facebook page. There is one feature that puts Google Plus’ pages in another league to Facebook and their Fan pages.

Hangouts where one of the major features of Google +, even when there were not business pages available, it allowed up to 10 people to chat using video and audio and even more people to be able to join by text chat. This can really benefit a lot of different type of people and pages, but in terms of pages and businesses, it can become a great asset for many reasons.

My first example would be a support feature. The hangout can be started by the page and simply name the room as support. Then any customer or potential customer that has a question or needs help can join the room and ask for help accordingly. Because of the video chat capabilities, face to face interaction is possible, but not only that, demonstrations can also be shown. If a customer for example, does not know how to use their product, then the customer services in the hangouts can show exactly what to do.

On top of that, if a business is releasing a new product or maybe a new SEO Package something along those lines, then hangouts can be used to demonstrate the product and build up hype. Plus, if customers are in the hangout, then they can ask questions directly about it that specifically intrigues them. This means that customers will have the opportunity to get tailored information instantly.

Conclusion

Of course there are a few more examples, and really the sky is the limit in this case. Each business will use hangouts differently but they are there and they can be a great selling point, not only that, it increases customer service standards and creates a relationship between the business and the customer. I think hangouts ia a great feature, and the fact that pages can use them too is great! Definitely one more reason why Google Plus Pages are more resourceful than Facebook Fan Pages.
