Everybody knows that to optimisatio your website effectivly in any industry you need to add some high quality one way links to your website. Below are some ways that you can build links to your website quickly and effectivly without upsetting Google and getting yourself banned from the search engines:

1. Directories - There are many types of directories on the internet, including, Paid Directories, Bid Directories, Free Directories, Free Directories, and Niche Directories. Some of the best website directories are DMOZ, BOTW, and Yahoo.

2. Blogging - If you start a blog that others find interessting, and helpfull, then others will link to it naturally. Look at getting a blog integrated within your own website. This will also help with the amount of content and pages your site supports.

3. Tools - Offer tools that are free to use from your website. People will find these tools useful, and they will link to them from their site as a recommendation to their own visitors.

4. Press Releases - Submit press releases to site like PR Web and PR Log. You will get your press release passed round a few other sites. If people find it interesting they will link back to your site also.

5. Articles - Submit articles about your industry, your products, and anything else to do with your industry that you think others might find interesting when searching the internet. You can link back to your own website, and people may also re publish the press releases on their sites with a link back to yours too.

You can gain links from all of the above sources with no cost what so ever. However you will need to put some serious man hours in if your going to ty to compete for first page by doing just the above (thats with no guarantees too). Alternativly, hire an SEO company to do the work for you!

For some reason many website owners seem to think that when they are at the top of the first page of the search engines they can stop optimising their website as we have finished our job and it stops there.

I must put a stop to this now, as this has been mentioned a few times lately, and someone somewhere is passing this misconseption to people (and they are probably rogue). Once your website is optimised, and on the first page of the search engines, or even if it is on the first position on the first page of the search engines it is not finished. It has only just finished the begining of the SEO work, there is plenty more to do yet.

When you first reach the first position on Goolgle you will see your website positions move about a little, this is commonly known as a “Google Dance” this means that your site is optimised for the position that it is in, however so are the others around it. Google is not sure which one deserves the top spot, so you need to keep building, and building more links, keep adding, and adding more fresh unique content to your website until the position stabablises and your site is cemented in the first position.

Once this is done, we are only hal way through the job. The next part is probably the hardest part of the optimisation process. Now, we need to keep you in first position. Now you are there, all of your competitors who are also optimising their sites have their eye on your site, they are looking at where you get your links from, seeing how often you update the unique content on your website for search engine optimisation purposes. They will be contantly trying to knock you off of the top spot. So we need to ensure that we are doing more and better quality link building than areone else in your industry to keep your 1st position for you.

So now we have learnt that search engine optimistion is not just a one-off job, it is a constant process that needs to be repeated all of the time, we need to ensure that your competitors do not catch up and take over your positions.

Links are a very crucial part of any SEO campaign. Not only that, but building links will also help drive traffic to your site from others too. There are two types of links really, they are as follows:

Internal Links

Internal links are links that are from one page of your website to another page. This will help people navigate around your website until they find what they are looking for. Internal linking is also a strong factor of natural and ethical search engine optimisation. Internal links help the search engine site crawlers to navigate around your website and find new content that they have to update Google with. Correctly building internal links on your website will ensure that your site is promoted ethically.

External Links

External links a links that are pointing to your website from other website or web pages that are not connected to your site in any other way. There are a couple of uses for these links. The first use is to let people know that your website exists, people can click on these links that are pointing to your website to find your products and services that you have to offer them. The other reason, and probably one of the most important factors of search engine optimisation is link building so that search engines can see how many other sites are pointing to your website via these external links. It is important not only to ensure that the anchor text of the link is your keyword, but to also ensure that the links that are pointing to your website are from other themed websites. This means that the website pointing to yours should be of the same content, or relevance.

The more links you have from other trusted websites that are themed, the bestter as far as the search engines are concerned. Be careful not to build links too fast to your website, or you can be penalised by Google for over optimising your website.

Ok, so you have decided that you want a website to market your business, products, services, or just for fun. You have 2 choices, with regards to starting the website. Do you buy an existing website? or do you buy a new domain name?

If you buy an existing website you have the advantage that the site proberbly already ahs some internet presence, therefore Google has already crawled the website, and know that it exists. The downside to this though, is it can be expensive. For a website that has a history in the search engines can quite easily cost you £100 plus, just for the name, with a basic design, and content.

If you buy a new domain name, and build your site from scratch, you have the bonus that the domain is cheaper, you also get to pick what domain you like, rather than taking a name that someone else has picked already. The down side to having a new site is that Google does not know about it yet. However there are a few solutions to getting your website indexed quickly by Google:

Create a dynamic xml sitemap listing all your website pages on it, and then submit it to Google. This will then ensure that Google knows about all of the pages on your website, and will crawl them.

Build links to your website from other popular websites (remember all links should be from other related sites, or pages to your website. Spiders crawl around websites via links, so the more you build, the more you get visited.

Submit your website directly to search engines using the “submit site” option on most of their home pages.

Employ a search engine optimisation company to work on having your site indexed within a few days. This won’t be too costly, and will be worth it, especially if you are looking for SEO work to be conducted on your site. If you are taking out a search engine optimisation package, then the indexing of the site should be included in the cost of the package.

Although our tips above do not guarantee your site being crawled within a certain period of time (12 hours or so) they will help your website get index by the major search engines alot quicker than if you was to just build a website and leave it.

Correctly Using Heading Tags

Much like a book or a letter document, a website needs sections on each page, brokern up by headings, this can be done with the heading tags. There are 6 different main heading tags that can be used, they are as follows: H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6. The H1tag is the most prominent header on the page, and then H2, and H3 and so on.

Normally you would look to target 4 - 5 keywords to a pagefor search engine optmisation, maybe even as many as 10 keywords to a page (depending on competative the keywords are). The most competative keywords would be placed in the H1 header near the top of the web page, with the least competative keywords being put in the H2 header further down the page. As practice, we also find it helpful to put some of the keywords in a H3 tage within the text of the site too (this will offer more exposure to these keywords throughout the page).

You must be careful how the headers are written as putting too many keywords within a header of a site will be seen as stuffing the keywords, or spamming the headers, which in turn can get your site penalised by the search engines, this is known as “over optimisation”.

Although this is a very simple part of onpage optimisation, it is still a crucial part when mixing it with the other onpage factors that need to be implemented to ensure that your website is pushed further up the rankings. Usually only the H1, H2, and the H3 tags are used when optimising a website.

Top 5 SEO Myths

Because search engine optimisaiton is an online industry it makes SEO the most talked about industry on the internet with over 18% of discussions on the internet being aimed towards either website design, development or search engine optimisation. Because there are so many blogs, forums, and online communities that webmasters contribute to, it floods the internet with hundreds of myths, lies, and misinformation about what search engine optimisation really is.

These untrue myths make my job, and the job of many SEO’s much harder, as we are the ones who end up having to explain to a customer that “you can’t get a PageRank 8 for a brand new site within 3 months, even if you do pay me £1,000.00 tip” it just can’t be done.

So now it’s time that I point out some myths that really are only myths:

“Doing pay per click helps your optimisaiton campaign” - This is very, very untrue. There is no way that Google will give this prefence to any website. It has been tried by many SEO companies who bought into this myth when it was first tlaked aobut (luckly I was not one who fell for this one).

“Once my site is on Page 1 of Google it will stay there” - It’s because of this comment that I decided to write this post. I have spoken to 2 people today, and both of them have spoke to other people, or read other posts that say the above quote is true. THink about this for a moment, once you stop optimising your competition will carry on until they move ahead of you, and if you have stopped, it wont take long.

“Changing meta tags and link building is all you need to do” - While meta tags, and link building are very important factors within the process of search engine optimisaiton, they will not get your website to the first page alone. There are many other factors involved in search engine optimisation.

“This other SEO company guaranteed me first page positions” - This statement is an absolute hard sell tactic to customers of an SEO company with either a bad or desperate salesman working on their behalf. No company can guarantee any rankings in the search engines for any keywords, “not even us.”

“You need to submit my site to the search engine every week” - Erm… no we don’t. search engines like Google search website that have had any updates made on them reguarly anyway so there is no need for this practive, however if you would like to submit your site once or twice a year, then fine. It has been said that submitting your site to the search engines every week can even be detremental to your rankings, as the search engines see this as spamming their submissions.

There are many more Myths, and most of which are too silly to believe, so I will leave that for another post some time.

We have added a new tool to our website today. This tool is free to use, and will help you find out information about your own website.

We have added a link popularity tool to help you with your SEO campaign on your website. This tool have a couple of major purposes to it, and will assist you greatly in your search engine optimisaiton of any site on the internet. We ourselves use this tool to help us with our own SEO projects for our clients.

The link popularity allows you to firstly look at the top 1,000 links that are pointing to your competitors sites, so you can check on who is pointing to them, and see if you can also gain a link from that source, then not only will you end up with all the links that your main competitors have, but you will have other links that you have added along the way too. This tool has seen many websites to the top of the search engines. It saves masses amount of time, having to source places to get links from. Just see where your competitors have them from, and do the same thing, bt you need to add a little extra too, to beat them.

The other thing this link popularity, SEO tool help with, is looking at the links on your own site, ensuring that the directories you are submitting to are linking to you, and to ensure that any sites you sponsor are still linking to you for as long as they promised they would.

Use this tool smartly, and you could save yourself alot of time and effort in the long run.

What is PageRank, and what does it mean? Pagerank is a factor that Google has bought in to its algorythms to help determin how trustworthy a site is, and how many other sites believe that the website in question is relevant for what it is saying it is relevant for.

PageRank is a factor that rates how good your site is, most people think of pagerank, as the higher your pagerank the higher up the search engines you will be, well thats not correct, there ar emillions of websites that are ranked highly with a low pagerank. Pagerank is a score that Google gives your website out of ten. For example, most new websites will start off with a pagerank of zero. As they grow older, and bigger, and gain more links from other websites that have pagerank, the higher your pagerank will grow.

To increase pagerank it is believed that you need to gain more links. Links are thought to pass on pagerank, so if you get a link from ten pagerank six sites, that will help you gain more pagerank than gaining eighty links from pagerank zero sites.

When looking to add links to your site, dont make the same mistake as thousands do, and just look at pagerank, there is a whole lot more than pagerank to look at when gaining links to your website. Also be sure to use a “true pagerank tool” as there are many webmasters that fake their pagerank in order to sell links on their site for more money. Be sure to check, as a pagerank eight site that has fake pagerank will only do you harm, not good.

You can check your pagerank buy using a Free PageRank Tool.

Below you will find 3 easy steps to help your website rank higher. Now lets first of all make one thing clear, search engine optimisation is not a quick fix, or an easy method, so don’t think that just making these changes you will see your website on the first page of Google and the other major search engines. However by following these simple steps you will find that your website is three steps closer to gaining a higher ranking than you already hold.

Step 1. Unique Content - Search engines loves site that have lots of unique content that is updated on a regular basis, by doing this you will be encouraging the Google bots (spiders) to visit your site more often so they can update their listings of how your site is ranked. The best way to add more and more unique content to your website is by adding a news feed or a blog that is updated on a regular basis. How often should I update the blog? If your in a competative industry you need to be updating your blog on a daily basis at least. If your target keywords are low to medium in difficulty then you can update your blog or news feeds about once or twice a week as a minimum. However it is important to keep all content unique and relevant to your website for SEO reasons.

Step 2. Competition - Analyse your competitors websites. There are a few things that you are looking for when looking at your competitors websites, they include:

Check their backlinks, how many have they got, what is the anchor text on their links, and where are their links comming from.

How many pages do they have on their website? Is your site big enough to compete? If not build a blog into your website, or a newsfeed.

Check their onpage optimisation, how well is their site written?

How old is their website? Age is a big factor when optimisation a website. The older they are, the better they are (just like whisky).

Step 3. Optimisation - There are two parts to search engine optimisation, onpage, and offpage. Below are the things you need to ensure are updated correctly to rank for.

Onpage Optimisation:

Ensure the Title Tag is well written for the search engines, and factored towards your keyphrases.

Your meta description has to have an accurate summary of what the website is about, and what it offers its visitors (it helps to add a couple of keywords in here, but don’t spam it).

meta tags, list your keywords that your targeting.

the content is the major part to onpage optimisation, and has to be written accuratly with about 2% - 7% of the content needs to include your targeted keywords (this is known as keyword density).

Offpage Optimisation:

Offpage optimismation is more kommonly known as link building. The main aspect of this is to get your website listed on as many different web pages on the internet as possible with a link back to your site. Before you do that, some research is needed. You need to ensure that the sites that you get links from are relevant, and are not link farms. Ensure that you get your website listed in directories (in the correct category) and try to get some press releases, and articles written and posted, these will bring you valuable backlinks from well respected websites).
