<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>What is Content Marketing?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Content marketing is about creating and sharing quality, free content to win new customers and increase the engagement of existing ones. Content that is closely connected to your business / brand; that is informative and / or interesting; and that wins the trust and loyalty of customers in what you’re selling. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Background to content marketing.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Content marketing is not new. It is, however, now a key part of marketing because:</span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;"> 1) of the certain limitations of advertising </span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;"> – people are more wary of advertising than before (although there is still marketing value in good, creative, entertaining or informative advertising). </span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;"> – audiences increasingly, have the technology to avoid it (although, technology is helping to make advertising more relevant)</span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;"> 2) of opportunities in organic search </span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;"> – it’s a way of increasing your website profile in organic search. Now more than ever as Google makes SEO far more challenging. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Content marketing has four main concepts behind it.</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Creating great content</span></strong><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;">Its about creating great content – educational / advisory / useful. But, also, content that is entertaining (depending on which industry you’re in). And content that is relevant (i.e. you know exactly who your audience is). It’s, also, about sharing content. Although the concept of “free�? is really important, in some cases, not all content needs to be free (for example, your free content might be so good that it is enough to attract audiences to your paid content – and they won’t mind paying for it).<br/>

<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Thought leader</strong></span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;">It’s about being a thought leader. Providing information about your industry in general that your audience will find useful. Perhaps there is a gap of knowledge in the market in general. Or, perhaps, you’re able to provide this information better than others. “Thought leader�? goes against the idea of sales / self-promotion. You want to provide education / advice. Not appear as if you’re selling / promoting something. But, of course, you’re providing content that is related to what you do (something marginally, sometimes, directly, and everything inbetween).<br/>

<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><b>Trust and loyalty</b><br/>
</strong>It’s about building up trust and loyalty with customers. Trust with new customers. And loyalty with existing ones. Focusing on trust as opposed to sell-sell-sell. Creating a sense of brand loyalty, including brand engagement and experience. </span></li>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Content Marketing Strategy</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Do it well or not at all.</strong> A key part of content marketing is to be a thought leader. Doing content marketing for the sake of appearing that you’re doing it, will backfire.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Research / relevancy.</strong> Work out who your content-marketing audience is; what others are saying (and what is not being said, and how you can say better what others are saying). Make your content marketing relevant.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>What sort of content would be appropriate</strong> (i.e. white papers, in particular, if you’re a business that produces medical equipment; fun interactive content if you’re a children’s publisher, for example)?</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Creative / Unique</strong>. Follow content marketing best practices. Get ideas from others. But be creative, too. Come up with your own ideas. That your content-marketing approach is different to others. Has its own unique flavour.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Harmonizing tactics.</strong> Try and use as many different content-marketing tactics (or types) as you can (although not at the cost of what you’re best at). But try and create brand consistency/story between the different tactics.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Update content.</strong> You’ve put together a lot of great content. Sometimes just a few small out-of-date facts and figures can put people off. Maintain the value of your content by updates (not just of facts and figures but of ideas and analysis, too). Little work compared to all the initial work you did for that particular content.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Opportunistic. </strong>Content marketing will often throw up positive results you weren’t expecting. For example, you might appear highly for a particular useful, relevant keyword you weren’t expecting. You need to look out for these opportunities and then use them to your advantage. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Promoting content.</strong> It’s one thing creating great content. It’s another thing ensuring people see it. Therefore, content promotion is a key part of content marketing strategy. In particular, via social media, but, also via organic search, your website (that the content isn’t hidden), mobile, and more. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Content Marketing as part of an overall holistic, digital marketing approach.</strong> Content marketing is part of marketing in general. Need to consider how it supports and can work best with other marketing approaches.</span></li>
