EDA In Westminster

We took the battle for greater recognition of eating disorders to the heart of Government on November 1 with a special reception at the House of Commons.

More than 50 people, including those recovering from eating disorders, families of people who have died from anorexia, MPs, doctors and health professionals met in the Jubilee Room in the Houses of Parliament to launch EDA Action Month.

Tessa Munt MP (Lib Dem, Wells) who hosted the event said: “If we don’t do something to change the way our services are focussed and help people recognise what is happening swiftly then those with eating disorders will be in a difficult place by the time help comes through the authorities.”

The work of EDA was outlined by our Director Jane Smith and the keynote address was given by Dr Dee Dawson, specialist in childhood eating disorders for over 55 years, who said: “EDA supports parents who often feel
overwhelmed by having to fight their children's eating disorder.”

“We need to campaign for a fairer system. Every child who develops an eating disorder should have access to first class treatment; it is time that this life threatening and debilitating illness was taken more seriously.”

The most powerful message came from Katie Waters, aged 21, who told of her personal experience of suffering from anorexia and bulimia.

A number of MPs attended the event and others sent along representatives to gather information on their behalf. We have now launched an e-petition calling for action.

Look out for more news during Action Month and let us know if you have a fund-raising event during November.

“I welcome the Anorexia and Bulimia Care action month. The impact of one person with an eating disorder can cause distress for a large number of people in families, schools and workplaces. Eating disorders are a serious mental health issue and deserve serious attention. This campaign raises awareness of that need and I am pleased to offer my support.” Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society.

“So many young lives are lost through the affects of eating disorders and it is time this issue was taken more seriously and recognised for what it is – a serious mental health problem in our society that needs to be addressed. The media concentrate on the issue of body image and young girls trying to look like supermodels and those in the health services and in Government have not prioritised it as a major issue to date. In fact it is a major cause of teenage suicide and is a major problem with older people who have lost a life partner, suffered redundancy or some other life trauma. During this month of action we want to raise awareness but also see some real changes in attitude and improvements in care.” Tessa Munt, MP for Wells.

“I am pleased to support the
excellent work of EDA and its' Action Month. I know from my constituent that EDA
is the leading charity in supporting individuals and families affected by
eating disorders. We need to do more to provide
positive support and treatment for the increasing numbers of people suffering
from eating disorders.” David Burrowes MP, Member of Parliament for Enfield Southgate.
