Google Analytics is an essential tool that all website owners should at least be aware of, analytics allows you to track a lot of information about your site, it informs you of all the activities that a user carries out, for example, where they directed from and how long they stayed on the site.

How to Create a Google Analytics Account

To create a Google Analytics account, you will need a Google account this doesn’t mean you need to create a Gmail account, simply go to https://www.google.co.uk and on the top right hand side of the screen you will see a sign in button.

After you have clicked on the sign in button you will be taken to a page that looks like this:

Once you have clicked the Create Account Button, you will be sent to a details page, fill out your details that you would like to use, remember creating a Google account and using analytics is completely free. I suggest that you use the same email address and other details that you use for the business or webpage that you are setting up your analytics for, however if you have multiple business’ then you could use any email address or create multiple Google accounts.

After you have filled out the form, it will send you to a page that confirms your account creation. You then need to go back to Google’s home page and again go to the sign in button. Your account should already be in the username section so just add your password and you should then be sent to a page like this:

Click on the verify button then go to your inbox and look for a message from “account-verification-noreply@google.com”. In the email you receive it will say “Welcome to Google Accounts. To activate your account and verify your email address, please click the following link:” if you click the link directly below it will take you to a page that looks similar to this:

So now you have your Google account all set up, we must move to setting up the analytics account.

How to Create Your Analytics Account

Visit the Analytics site: https://www.google.com/analytics/ and click the sign up button which is located on the left hand side:

You will then be taken to a login page, just enter your email address and password for the Google account you just created, then you will be directed to a sign up page, just click the sign up button on the bottom left hand side. Once you have been directed again, you are shown a form for your analytics account, it is essential that you enter all information correctly as any mistakes will affect your analytics results and may even cause it not to work.

You will then have to enter your full name and agree to Google’s Terms and Conditions, after you have done that you will be directed to a page showing the tracking code for your analytics, but the way I will show you how to add analytics to you site, you will not need this code. You will need another code. So click onto the save and finish button.

Adding Analytics to Your Site

Log onto your Content Management System, yours could be a WordPress, Joomla or Create however there are many more. Once logged in look for a an edit site information tab, once on here look for Google analytics and add the UA code, If your CMS does not have this, then there will be a plug in available, make sure to check ratings and so on to see if the plug in is functional and users are satisfied with the plug in. Install your chosen plug in into your CMS, follow the instructions and add your UA number to the plug in.

Checking Your Analytics

Google Analytics should take no longer than 72 hours to register, but the majority of the time it is done quicker, to check your analytics, simply visit: the analytics home page, the account overview page will show very brief information, but clicking the report button will show you much more in-depth information.

This tutorial will show how to create a quick, attractive, glossy navigation bar for your website, like that shown below:

Open Photoshop, create a rectangular shape for your navbar and fill with a colour of your choice (the example uses #40a367). Now double click the layer and select Gradient Overlay and add a gradient of a slightly darker shade of your colour up to a slightly lighter shade and click OK (the example uses, #36935b to #49b473).

Now create a new layer and draw another rectangular shape that covers the top half of the navbar and fill with white. Reduce the Opacity of this layer down to around 12% and you should have somthing like that shown below:

Next, create a new layer and draw a 1 pixel white horizontal line accross the top of the navbar and ensure the line is 1 pixel below the top of the bar.

Now the basis of the bar is complete you can create the seperation lines. Simply create a new layer and draw a 1 pixel vertical line that is a few shades darker then the darkest part of the navbar (i.e. the bottom of the navbar). Now do the same again but draw a line that is a few shades lighter than the top of the navbar.

Place the lines next to each other with the lighter one to the right and combine the layers. Now simply copy the seperator lines to the desired number of tabs and add your white text and your done.

Impression share is one of the most important metrics’ which helps to measure a reach of search network campaign. This particular Google Adwords metrics shows the percentage of impressions where the text ads were shown out of the total possible impressions for targeted keywords.

Lost IS Budget column shows the percentage of impressions were lost because of too low budget.

Lost IS Rank column shows the percentage of impressions were lost because of too low ad rank. The reasons for low ad rank can be various: too low max cpc and low quality scores.

The cheapest way to increase impression share is to improve ad rank whilst increasing max CPC or optimising entire Adwords campaign with an aim to improve quality scores.

To fully understand your Google Adwords account performance is important to analyze your paid search visitor’s behavior using Google Analytics stats. As Google Analytics and Google Adwords being one fully integrated system, Google allows to import Google Analytics goals to Google Adwords Conversion tracking interface. This functionality allows to measure different conversions than view of key page. Let’s say one of your goals is based on time spent on site or number of pages visited, Google Adwords won’t be able to measure that kind of conversion, but Google Analytics will, so you just have to setup time spent on time as a goal and import this goal to Google Adwords.

To import Google Analytics into the Google Adwords you have to follow the setps:

1. Login to you Adwords Account and Hover over “reporting and Tools” then select “Conversions”

2. Click on the button “Imported from Google Analytics”

3. Then select The Goals you want to import and click on “Import”

Happy analysing!

The use of the ‘nofollow’ attribute has greatly affected the link building process for many website owners. The hyperlink value essentially tells the search engine bots crawling your site not to pay any attention to the links specified. This has its pros and cons – by implementing the ‘nofollow’, you’re ensuring that the specified links aren’t adding to the link juice of your site, ie they won’t be increasing your popularity rating. However, they will still help associate your website with other relevant pages and so improve your exposure. It has been extremely useful to deter spammers from gaining any sort of advantage from posting irrelevant comments on your pages or blogs.

The ‘nofollow’ is an attribute that can be added in to HTML coding – it’s often called a tag by mistake.

All links are set to ‘dofollow’ by default. This means that their worth is assessed by the search engine crawlers as standard. To turn the link path into a ‘nofollow’, use the following code:

rel=”nofollow”

in your code syntax as below:

<a href=”www.yoursitename.co.uk” rel=”nofollow”>Example of Page</a>

If you want to, you can also make the entire website ‘nofollow’ by implementing the code into your meta deta on each individual page. An example is listed below:

<html>
<head>
<title> NoFollow Tutorial Example</title>
<meta name=”description” content=” “/>
<meta name=”robots”> content=”nofollow“>
</head>
<body>

Using ‘nofollows’ correctly will lower the number of outbound links that are indexed by the major search engines and aid a natural, white-hat link building process.
