Here at SEO Positive we had an issue with one of our blogs, an unresponsive script preventing the editor from working. After some digging around in the shroud that is WordPress’ code I worked it out to be an issue with the wp_postmeta table.

The error occurs in this file, ‘/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js?ver=1.3.2:19′

We updated our site a number of weeks back and re-imported all of our blogs, when you import a blog it would appear there is a glitch that inserts into the wp_postmeta table rows with a postid of 0.

This is what causes the unresponsive script, below is the code that we used to fix it, all you have to do is log into your database, back up the wp-postmeta table (just in case) and enter this into SQL input

delete from wp_postmeta where postid = '0';

After you run that on your table you should find that your WordPress blog works just as well as a new blog.

So we’re all used to using Dream Weaver, Notepad++, Zend Studio whatever floats your boat. But you have an important change that you just don’t want to open one of these cumbersome programs to open, because you know it will take literally a few seconds, misplaced semi-colon or an equal’s sign where there shouldn’t be one.

The answer is Command Line! Command line is your best friend as a web developer, here at SEO Positive we use it all the time for fixes on new clients sites and existing sites and for editing important hidden files such as [dot] files, there are a few you can choose from but my favourite is vim as it provides fantastic source colouring for most files.

Linux/Unix based operating system’s have these small programs built into them and if you’re using a Windows machine you will need access to a Linux or Unix based system and to use PuTTY to access the command line if you have appropriate access to it.

once you have logged into your command line window you’ll probably be thinking, well what now?

its very simple, at SEO Positive we use a mix of vi, vim and nano. But what are these I hear you saying, they are editors based on the command line.

You need to find the location of your desired file and type the following into your command prompt window depending on what editor you have chosen.

sudo vim /location/to/your/file

You will then be asked for a password, if you’re on a web server you may not need to prefix this line with ‘sudo’ as this is a command that tells the system you want to perform an action as the computers administrator.

You will then be presented with the source of your file. I’ve written a short list of the keyboard short cuts for vim and some links to a full list of short cuts for the other two previously mentioned editors.

^ = shift

^E = skip the current word
^A = edit the end of the current line
a = edit the current line at the current cursor position
esc = exit edit mode (file remains open)
^W = save changes (write changes)
^ZZ = save current changes and exit vim (closes file and vim)

And the links to other resources:

Virtual Host’s

May 25th, 2010

As a web developer, I’m constantly having to set up virtual hosts to better manage any project I’m running.

But since there are so many platforms to develop on, Macs, Windows, Linux, Unix and some people even use a command prompt window with either vim, vi or some derivative I will only be showing you how to write a <VirtualHost> block and the different options available to this short piece of code.

Firstly you need to find you httpd.conf file I’ve listed below some standard locations for them.

Mac, Linux, Unix - /etc/apache2/httpd.conf

Windows Xampp installation - C:\xampp\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf

Windows Wamp installation - c:\wamp\Apache2\conf\httpd.conf

In some cases, these httpd.conf files will simply include another file which contains the <VirtualHost> blocks, these are usually kept in a folder under your apache directory called ‘extra’ and more often than not called ‘httpd-vhosts.conf’

You will also need to find your hosts file, again below is a list of the known directories under different development platforms.

Mac, Linux, Unix - /etc/hosts

Windows - %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\

So lets get started with the <VirtualHost> block, I’ll show you the basics which is what I use at SEO Positive below to get you started.

<VirtualHost 127.0.0.1>
ServerName "website.mac"
DocumentRoot "/Library/WebServer/Documents/websiteName"
</VirtualHost>

And also adding to my list of hosts in the host file 127.0.0.1 website.mac and restarting apache will give me a ‘domain’ I can build a website under. As I have my error reporting set to E_ALL | E_STRICT I do not need any logs but below is an example of a typical <VirtualHost> block.

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName www.example.com
DocumentRoot /Library/WebServer/Documents/example.com
ServerAdmin webmaster@example.com
ErrorLog /Library/WebServer/Documents/example.com/example.com-error_log
CustomLog /Library/WebServer/Documents/example.com/example.com-access_log common
</VirtualHost>

As you can see there are a few extra lines for the logs and the webmasters email address, you can edit these lines to better suite your needs for error logging but here at SEO Positive, we get things right first time so logging isn’t necessary.

Browser dependant CSS tricks

May 24th, 2010

Good morning all,

Today we’ve decided to teach you about browser dependent CSS properties, such as text-shadow, -moz-border-radius and -webkit-border-radius all magical things that totally ostracize Internet Explorer from the browsing world.

“Internet Explorer is only pre-installed to download Firefox”

Possibly one of my favourite quotes of all time, as we all know Internet Explorer was designed to make web designers lives harder with its, frankly, disgusting rendering and parsing engine. So none of these CSS rules will work in any IE below version 9. Which by the way, has some large improvements and a demo is available to download from the Microsoft website.

The CSS properties we’re going to learn about today are listed below.

border-radius (CSS3 - Not widely supported as yet)

-moz-border-radius (Firefox)

-webkit-border-radius (Webkit)

and text-shadow (All but Internet Explorer)

These are just a few of the available CSS properties, but a great starting point for anyone looking at ‘prettying’ up there website.

First off we’ll start with the 3 border-radius properties, all dependent on different browsers and all equally brilliant. What the border radius property actually does is it creates a rounded edge of most elements you apply it to, Such as
and there are derivatives of this property as well for independant corners of your element.

CSS3 (not widely supported)

Mozilla

WebKit

Opera, IE9

Firefox

Safari, Konqueror

border-top-right-radius

-moz-border-radius-topright

-webkit-border-top-right-radius

border-bottom-right-radius

-moz-border-radius-bottomright

-webkit-border-bottom-right-radius

border-bottom-left-radius

-moz-border-radius-bottomleft

-webkit-border-bottom-left-radius

border-top-left-radius

-moz-border-radius-topleft

-webkit-border-top-left-radius

border-radius

-moz-border-radius

-webkit-border-radius

As you can see, the above properties have there independent corner properties and most of them are prefixed with there browsers engine name. And Also you can see which browsers from the above table support which property.

To use any of the above border-radius properties all accept the same arguments, you only need to set the size of the corner you would like on your element. See the example below

div
{
border-radius:14px;
-moz-border-radius:14px;
-webkit-border-radius:14px;
}

This example will put a 4 pixel round edge on every corner on all the divs on the page with this property on it. See a live example of the above code below.

“God is my Shepard” ~ Psalm 23

The example above will only work in the browsers mentioned in the table earlier on in this post so if you’re using IE you will just see a square cornered box. The border-radius rule is fantastic and is being more and more widely used by web developers.

Next we have the text-shadow css property, again fantastic for adding that extra touch to your website without having to use images, we have not tested its compatibility with font libraries such as Cufon and Sifr as yet, but we at SEO Positive use the text-shadow property quite often in our builds for a final touch to our clients websites.

The text shadow property can be both very simple to use and very complicated to use, but we will teach you the basics of this brilliant effect, see the example below on how to set up a simple text shadow to bring out text from a pages background. This property is, as far as we understand, supported by all browsers other than Internet Explorer…Typically.

p
{
text-shadow: 2px 2px #3b3b3b;
}

the above example will put a dark shadow under the text 2 pixels from the top and 2 pixels from the left that will be a dark grey (#3B3B3B) see the example text below, again these will work in all decent browsers (Just not IE)

“I’m not anti-religious, I just don’t believe in magic…”

As you can see, there is a dark shadow behind the text, it is a solid colour though so see the examples below on how to add a blur effect for a nice text shadow.

p
{
text-shadow: 2px 2px 3px #3b3b3b;
}

“I’m not anti-religious, I just don’t believe in magic…”

as you can see in the above example there is a new variable added to the property, this third argument (in this case is 3px) will blur the shadow by 3px which looks much better.

So there you go, you have a taste of the available CSS3 and browser specific CSS properties that add some lovely finishing touches to any website without having to use any images.

Page Optimisation tutorial

May 20th, 2010

So the title of this post is particularly broad in the subjects in which it actually covers but today we are going to look at simple on page search engine optimisation factors with some hints and tips with some helpful resources.

Firstly, you need to make sure you know who you’re getting your website built by because a phrase we like to use at SEO Positive is “there are a lot of cowboys on the web”

We quite often get clients join us who have there websites built in tables, which works, but is no good for SEO, primarily because they are a lot heavier than a site built in CSS. We build all of our sites in CSS which both loads faster, can be optimised and changed easier and validates a lot easier than a table layout.

Also a lot of web design agencies won’t bother with even simple SEO elements such as meta keywords and meta descriptions, if they aren’t putting these elements into their sites all of us could easily assume they aren’t worried about keyword density, page load times and link structures. All vital parts to any SEO campaign.

When we build any website here at SEO Positive we ensure we make all of our sites as optimised as possible, see below for an example of our meta headers which aid for SEO.

Your web pages should only ever have between 5 and 8 keywords, as any more may cause a ‘dilute’ effect on your websites optimisation, and your descriptions should be short, roughly 100 characters and have some of your keywords in it as the description is the text you see under the link in search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and All The Web.

Keyword density is also important, keyword density is a percentage of the number of times your keyword is mentioned in your content, we recommend between 5% and 8% as this tells search engines that your content is of a relative subject to the website you own.

We also mentioned page speed above, this can be quite a lengthy process, but a very important thing to do to any website since Google’s algorithm altered to include this as a ranking factor. The things we recommend to do are listed below.

Compress your website, not sure if you have it already? visit https://www.port80software.com/tools to check

If you haven’t already minified your CSS and JavaScript its worth doing as this decreases the size of the download speeding the page up, a fantastic JavaScript minimiser can be found https://fmarcia.info/jsmin/test.html

Combine all your CSS into single files and include them into specific pages to minimize the amount of code your browser has to scan before it can apply styles

Combine all your JavaScript files into one file, again this decreases a download size and speeds up loading times

If your JavaScript contains no document.write() calls, its best to include it in the bottom of your pages as your browser will download and interpret these files before parsing your content/design.

Set up sub-domains that don’t set cookies and spread the css, JavaSvript and images across these. Also known as parallel downloads. Most modern browsers will only download 2 files at any one time from a single domain where as sub domains will allow for much more than 2 downloads at a time

Optimise your images, we all want great looking sites. But at what cost, you can optimise your images so they are smaller and download faster. Also remove any headers the files may have as these increase file sizes as well and are unnecessary.

Once you have managed all of the above, your page should be on its way to being fully optimised.
