<div class="comment-content"><p>Dr. Debra Holland directed me to this post. While there are some good ideas above, I do disagree with the “moderation implies censorship” response that you received. While it’s desirable (in my view) that company-sponsored blogs/forums allow both positive and negative comments from readers, there are some things that have to be moderated (or censored, if you will), including slanderous statements and disclosure of trade secrets. For example, if I were to go to a company-sponsored site and falsely declare that the company CEO only had hours to live, the ramifications to the company’s stock price and business prospects would be immense.</p>
<p>Rather than deciding WHO should moderate, attention should be paid to HOW they moderate. Guidelines should be set up for the moderators and the users, and explicitly communicated.</p>

Interesting point you raise because there must be situations where careless moderation could damage not just the brand but, more immediately, the value of the company, in some way. Someone, has to coordinate, surely, the overall social media strategy of the company – community manager, for example. And the community manager must be in tune with / knowledgeable of not just brand values and PR issues but, also, finance, legal, HR, customer service, and so on.</p>
