</strong>Do you need a degree or HND? No. But either would be useful, in particular, English, arts, media, journalism or marketing.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Skills</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Creative.</strong> A creative streak and a willingness to become more creative in general.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Language.</strong> A good knowledge of, and love for, language.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Written</strong>. Ability to write in a variety of different styles</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Detail.</strong> Attention to detail, including proof-reading.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Marketing.</strong> Some understanding of research, customers, brands and sales.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Zeitgeist</strong>. An interest in the world of contemporary culture, entertainment, technology and society in general.<br/>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Different types of copywriting roles</strong></span><br/>
<span style="color: #000000;">There are different types of copywriting roles: in advertising agencies, writing copy for TV and prints ads; in direct marketing agencies, writing copy for direct mail, in digital marketing agencies, writing copy for SEO and email; and so on. Consider, firstly, what sort of copywriting role you would have the best change of getting into. And then consider using one role as a stepping-stone to another. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>How to improve skills / get experience / get into copywriting</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Learn.</strong> Pick up what you can off the web. Consider doing a short but intensive course, to start off with, either on or offline. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Read.</strong> Read widely (books and magazines) to pick up different writing styles. And analyse good copy, learning from that. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Work placement – marketing.</strong> Do a work placement in a marketing agency where you learn about marketing with the opportunity, perhaps, of writing some copy. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Work placement – copywriting</strong>. Focus, now, more on a copywriting work placement. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Meet people in the industry.</strong> Ask around. Build up contacts. Open yourself to opportunities. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Advertising agency route.</strong> If you want to get into an advertising agency, learn about advertising. Learn about the industry. What makes a good ad. What does an art director do. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Do interesting things, in general.</strong> Doing interesting things increases creativity. And makes you more attractive to potential employers. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Journalism.</strong> Write articles for your local newspaper / scripts for your local radio. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Blogging.</strong> Start up your own blog. And if you can make some money from it with Adsense, for example, better. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Portfolio.</strong> Create a portfolio (or “book”) of work you’ve done in work placements. But, also, examples of copy you would like to create for other brands, if you were given the opportunity – and copy that isn’t just creative but relevant to the marketing goals of the brand. So, for example, you’re able to show you have an overall understanding of the brand, of the brand’s customers, the brand’s marketplace, and the brand’s competition. So often inexperienced copywriters just focus on creativity instead of focusing on both the creative and marketing sides of copywriting. </span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Do something unusual to catch the attention of potential employers.</strong> For example, sending in an interesting gift, accompanied by some great copy.<br/>

<div class="comment-content"><p>I assist my partner (website developer) with graphics & editing duties that in the most part has evolved into a proof-reading & copywriting role.</p>
<p>Having no formal qualifications within the field I rely entirely on experience & have always been a stickler for detail, particularly in written text.</p>
<p>I find it’s best not to repeat words, but to break sentences up & create new paragraphs as often as possible.</p>
<p>Having read your short article I am now considering taking my skills a step further by offering proof-reading & copywriting as a separate concern.</p>
